Well, basically in his past he went through a massive war, and a lot of emotional devastation including the death of his friends, his future is... essentially dying in space. He's human, but he's noted to have an insanely high will-power (a sequel series has him no-sell an eldritch being's attempt to terrify him and forcibly ejected her from his ship through will power alone).
